One of our clients, an MD in fact, told us one day that she assumed aches and pains were a normal part of getting older. It wasn't until she was three months into her training program at The Strength Studio that she realized she was starting to become more and more pain free. She immediately correlating the reduced pain to her increased strength. She had done tons of research on our method of exercise (Power of 10/Super Slow) prior to joining but it wasn't until she experienced the transformation in her own body that she became a believer for life. Once she saw the power low force, high intensity training has to improve one's life, she began to recommend it to all of her patients, young and old alike.
If you're living in pain, know that it doesn't have to be that way. Maybe you've tried physical therapy or other methods of exercise to no avail. If you're dependent on medication for pain relief and want to try a more natural approach to pain relief, we encourage you to strength train with us.
Why Do Seniors Get So Much Pain?
First, we want to preface this section by saying that there are a variety of ailments and that pain can stem from a number of those ailments. To simplify it, and without knowing everyone's specific conditions, we understand that a large portion of seniors will experience pain from the simple lack of strength.
The reason for this is that skeletal muscle strength protects your joints and bones. If nothing is done to maintain or increase your strength, then you will begin to lose it at consistent rate for the rest of your life.
The magical age at which we start losing strength: 30 years of age. Young right?
At 30, the pituitary gland stops producing as many growth hormones. That means your body is not doing as much to help you naturally maintain your muscle tone or bone density. Without a progressive strength resistance program, your muscles will languish, giving most people a flabby look to their bodies. Over time, this flabby look continues to cause the body to look like its sagging until eventually there is little to no strength, at which point the bones and joints start bearing the grunt of the force the body encounters throughout the day. This results in pain or injury.
The Good News
The good news is that this is reversible! In fact, done over a long period of time, clients who develop strength tend to also look younger than they did when they came in the first place. This is due to the new muscle tone filling out the area of skin that was originally sagging.
In regards to pain, developing muscle tone reduces pain by giving the force and resistance entered through daily living somewhere other than joints and bones to bear the grunt of it. Activities that were once difficult or painful (getting up, squatting down, picking things up, cleaning, gardening, etc.) become easier and life becomes more enjoyable again.
