"This past week, I participated with Hector in my first virtual workout. I was hesitant at first, but after having been a client of strength training for over 15 years, I did not want my sessions to come to a halt while the studio is closed, and I also know myself well enough to realize that however great my intentions, I would not do the workouts consistently on my own. The session was incredible, and far more comprehensive than I had anticipated. In addition to the squats, pushups and crunches (which I was able to do correctly with Hector's coaching) he added other exercises using some basic props that I have at home that closely emulate the machines that I use in my normal routine. His attention to detail in insuring correct form, style and breath in my workout has also supported my commitment to keep showing up to workout. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic and the current "shelter in place" directive, my commitment dwindled, and I had found it difficult to continue with a workout routine. So, I signed up with Hector to try a "virtual" workout using his recommended home exercises. My first Zoom session with him was seamless and effective. The same support of form, style, and breath control was just like being in the studio. Having the comfort of his kind supportive coaching in my own home helped re-energize my commitment to continue working out during this time of social distancing. "I was a little nervous before my first virtual workout with Hector, but at the same, I was looking forward to it.
I had several questions:
- Would it be a good workout?
- How would Hector be able to really see each exercise?
- Couldn’t I just keep watching the videos and fine tune my form on my own?
- Would Hector think I’m a wimp?
- I was amazed the first time I did the virtual workout with the videos. I had done squats, modified push-ups and crunches for years, but it had been a while for the usual reasons-mainly a busy life and injuries mounting as the years ticked away. I cautiously did the workout and was amazed at what a difference the super-slow method made with such basic moves. I immediately felt invigorated and encouraged that I wouldn’t be losing too much ground while the studio stays closed.
- I did do a little prep by carrying my iPad around the house and figuring out where I could position it for each exercise and decided on two spots-one for standing and squatting and one for the floor work.
- I decided Hector could help me bring my home workout to the next level and he certainly did. He had tips to help me personalize each exercise based on my particular problem areas and goals. He also took the time to answer my questions and even add another exercise. I had made so much progress at the Strength Studio in learning to keep my shoulders well positioned and in strengthening my upper back, and it was so important to me to keep that from slipping away. So, I crafted my own straight arm retractions using a foam roller. When I showed Hector he asked if had any exercise bands to add resistance. He waited while I dug them out. I walked around the house with my iPad and he spotted the perfect door set up. It turned out to be in the laundry room.
- As usual, Hector is always supportive and so, so helpful.
- This one is a bonus-I had motivation to tidy up every room of the house. With nobody coming to visit for weeks on end, you know how things can get! You might even need to invite Hector into the laundry room!" - SUSAN M.
